The Season 10 Championships for the Rose City Rollers are fast approaching!
“Kay’s is my favorite bar in all the city…It’s a cozy, wood-paneled joint brimming over with longtime patrons, moviegoers, older neighborhood folks, and rowdy roller girls…” – THE PORTLAND MERCURY
Many thanks to The Portland Mercury for including us in this spring’s Happy Hour Guide. Check out the full list here.
“Kay’s is my favorite bar in all the city. (Sorry, Moon & Sixpence—you’ve been ever so slightly edged out.) It’s a cozy, wood-paneled joint brimming over with longtime patrons, moviegoers, older neighborhood folks, and rowdy roller girls all stuffed into booths lining a mirrored wall. And the staff are the nicest people ever. The bar’s kick-ass daily happy hour includes some truly excellent pub grub. I’d recommend the BLT wrap ($5), the basic and tasty burger ($4), or the huge piles of poutine ($7) and loaded-up nachos ($6). Their grilled veggie salad ($7) is also the BOMB. Kick back and suck down a few well cocktails ($3) or micro pints ($3), while you watch the entire ‘hood walk through the door. CF” – THE PORTLAND MERCURY
“Kay’s is definitely further outside of our collective comfort zone, located in the antique-iest part of Sellwood, but it’s very much worth the trip. Kay’s burgers are all face-sized, and they’re not just big for the sake of being big. They are topped with gorgeous seasonal additions and local produce – making Kay’s a beautiful juxtaposition of deep dark dive and amazingly artistic burger kitchen.” – 15 PDX Burgers Every Burger Lover Should Try | NEWSCASTIC
“…Ghosts touch you. Mexican women make mole and black beans from a genius. Brunch can break your heart…” – (Five Stars) Ryan C.’s Reviews | Portland | YELP
We’ve had reviews reference Kay’s haunted history in the past. But few have been as enigmatic and entertaining as Ryan’s:
“I have worked there. High standards. Ghosts touch you. Mexican women make mole and black beans from a genius. Brunch can break your heart.” – (Five Stars) Ryan C.’s Reviews | Portland | YELP
“If you prefer gender neutrality and cold fish fem-nazi bartenders, then this is the place for you.” – (One Star) Dan G.’s Reviews | Hillsboro | YELP
Of all of the online reviews Kay’s has received these past several years, most of which are quite positive, this recently posted Yelp review might be the one that makes us the most proud…and it received the lowest possible rating: one star.
“This place ( Kay’s Bar ) is great as long as you’re not a proud upright-walking patriotic white American male. If you prefer gender neutrality and cold fish fem-nazi bartenders, then this is the place for you. A bunch of Reed College trust fund babies and assorted soldiers of ‘The Movement’ gathering together to giggle at the latest YouTube videos on their hand held devices while sipping the latest piss they call beer. Good Times, Cheers, Right On, No Worries, Peace, Hate, and any other one liner I may have forgot.” – (One Star) Dan G.’s Reviews | Hillsboro | YELP
“I had some of the best Buffalo wings, ever.” – THE DRINK NATION’S ‘Dive Bar Stars of Sellwood-Moreland’
“Kay’s, since 1934, is a corner bar in the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood. It’s a spacious, airy dive with plenty of booth space and a long bar with 16 stools. We’ve been to bars with stronger drinks and lower prices, but not many with the overall appeal of Kay’s.” – Read More at THE DRINK NATION
“…it is really inviting and has an old school feeling to it. Great service. The burgers are some of the best in town…” – TallTaste’s Reviews | Portland | TRIPADVISOR
Bars in Sellwood-Moreland are not typically the hottest tourist destinations in SE Portland. However, like most people, we’re gluttons for high praise:
“Recently visited for the first time and was very pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere inside does not match the outdoor decor, it is really inviting and has an old school feeling to it. Great service. The burgers are some of the best in town. They use fresh products and have a variety of toppings that will please almost anyone. The beer selection is pretty good, with some old stand-bys and seasonal rotations. The HH looks great and on Wednesdays you can get a burger and a beer for $6. Give Kay’s a try.” – TallTaste | TRIPADVISOR
